Evaluating Your Clinical Practice for Cultural Competence

Clinicians need to develop the capacity to sit comfortably with those different than themselves. Discomfort is common, particularly as our world changes. Clinical training programs often use the term, Cultural Competency to define this capacity to sit in difference and teach multicultural courses to review characteristics of various populations and/or intersectionality. Although useful orientations, clinicians may benefit from cultural humility models that are self-reflective and skills based. This workshop reviews one such model developed within a faith-based university that incorporates postmodern, outcome research and a Christian faith worldview.
Exploring How Attachment Styles Influence Holiday Experiences

The Person of the Therapist Training (POTT) Model

This presentation will provide a brief overview of the Person of the Therapist Training model (POTT), with special attention given to the POTT model’s use of a signature theme. Influenced by Henry Nouwen’s concept of a Wounded Healer, Harry Aponte developed an approach to using therapists’ own woundedness to better attune to clients and improve clinical judgment. Greater awareness and use of one’s own signature theme serves as a “superpower” to enhance the therapy process; rather than get derailed by a therapist’s brokenness. Opportunities for exploring and reflecting on one’s signature themes will be provided. However, participants will not be asked to share their signature themes, just reflect on their valuable use in the therapeutic encounter.

Professional boundaries are essential in ethical therapy, especially when engaging with vulnerable or high-risk populations. Dr. Julie Hayden will draw from current research and professional experience with individuals facing homelessness, trauma, addiction, and mental illness. She will demonstrate how strong professional boundaries not only protect the therapist but also significantly improve client outcomes by providing clear, compassionate limits and modeling of healthy boundaries.
This presentation will highlight common pitfalls, such as the therapist's urge to "rescue" clients, which can blur necessary professional lines. Dr. Hayden will offer practical strategies to maintain professional boundaries effectively while delivering empathetic and effective therapy.

The Center for Enriching Relationships (CER)is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. CER will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Education Chair in consultation with the members of the continuing education committee, the CER Ethics Chairperson and the Convention Chairperson.
While CER goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the convention staff which require intervention and/or action on the part of the convention staff or an officer of CER. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Chair will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.
If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the convention chair will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the convention chair will:
a) attempt to move the participant to another workshop or
b) provide a credit for a subsequent year's workshop or
c) provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.
